Frequently Asked Questions
Here you can find some of the most common questions we receive.
-
How are courses taught? How much interaction is there with the teacher?
Columbia School teachers support courses in different ways, depending on the learning model chosen - either Teacher-Facilitated or 1:1 Instruction. Teacher-Facilitated courses include teacher grading and feedback, with support and guidance provided through online messaging. There are no live class sessions provided in the Teacher-Facilitated model.
For a more individualized experience, we offer one-on-one instruction with direct teacher support in the 1:1 instructional model.
We also offer supplemental tutoring services to enrolled students, available in packages of five hourly sessions, available for an additional fee.
-
What are the qualifications of Columbia School teachers?

-
What other support do you offer?

-
How much parent involvement is required?
The amount of parent involvement will depend on the age of the student and the student’s academic needs. Younger students will require a high level of parent involvement to ensure students access and progress through the curriculum. Every parent or guardian has a personal login to the parent portal to follow the student’s progress, communicate with teachers, and receive support. We provide orientations and academic support services to assist students throughout their studies.

Yes, students can move at an accelerated pace in Columbia School courses. The flexible nature of the program is a good fit for students who may be moving more quickly through the curriculum in one or more subjects.
-
If my student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), what is the process Columbia School uses to make learning accommodations?
As a private school, Columbia School may not provide all the accommodations or modifications that would be required at a U.S. public school. We ask for families of enrolled students to send the IEP to our student services department at the time of enrollment. Upon receiving this information, we will schedule a meeting with our academic team to review the student's plan and needs, to ensure that the program is suitable for the student. Columbia School does not provide modifications to the curriculum, however the online nature of the program makes Columbia School an appropriate fit for students with certain learning or health needs. -
How does Columbia School serve students who need extra help and may have been working with resource teachers?
For many students with mild to moderate learning needs, online schooling provides flexibility that allows them to be more successful than in a traditional classroom setting. Students have the opportunity to work at their own pace and access built-in instructional resources and technology. Consult with a Columbia School Admissions Counselor to discuss your student’s specific learning strengths, challenges, and needs before enrolling to ensure that the program is a good fit for your student. -
Are supplemental school supplies or other materials required for Columbia School courses?
